Reading

English Intent

To foster a love of reading and writing, helping students build strong language skills. We aim to create a foundation for lifelong learning and academic success, while ensuring the curriculum is inclusive and engaging for all.

Reading Intent

At Barlby Primary School, we believe that reading is the cornerstone of learning. Our vision is that all children become confident, fluent and enthusiastic readers who can communicate effectively, think critically and engage with the world around them.

In line with the National Curriculum, our reading curriculum develops competence in:

•Word reading – taught systematically through high-quality phonics instruction

•Comprehension – teaching children to understand, interpret and respond to a wide range of texts

Guided Reading

In KS2, pupils access a wide range of high-quality fiction and non-fiction texts. We deliver four whole-class Guided Reading sessions per week focusing on the National Curriculum Reading Content Domains.

English

We further enrich children’s reading experiences through the Centre for Literacy in Primary Education (CLPE) Power of Reading scheme. These high-quality texts expose children to diverse stories, authors, cultures and writing styles, broadening vocabulary and deepening comprehension. Our aims are that all pupils:

•Read widely and often for both pleasure and learning

•Develop the stamina and fluency needed to access the full curriculum

•Explore authorial style

Reading for Pleasure

Reading Impact

Through our consistent approach to reading:

  1. Pupils become fluent, confident readers who can tackle unfamiliar words with independence
  2. Vocabulary grows rapidly and pupils discuss texts with increasing sophistication
  3. Children develop strong comprehension skills, enabling them to answer complex questions and engage in deeper analysis
  4. Pupils articulate preferences, recommend books to peers and read widely both in school and at home
  5. Confident readers emerge who are well-prepared for the next stage of their education

Ultimately, our pupils leave Barlby Primary School equipped not only with essential reading skills but with a lifelong love of books, empowering them to become successful learners!
